Each can operate as a standalone wireless router or setup to extend a network as a Mesh extension to create a seamless large coverage area wireless network.
I was using the AX88U as the base router (centrally located) and each of the AC68Us as Mesh extensions located about 60-100 feet from the base.
Asus makes the best home networking equipment and supports many of their router models to also function as an access point, wireless bridge or part of a mesh system.
Very powerful and reliable routers with lots of configuration options.
These models are also capable of running Asuswrt-Merlin firmware, which gives the devices some extra capabilities and better security over Asus stock firmware.
Also available is a high quality 8 Port unmanaged Gigabit switch.
