Employment Category Regular Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Biological Science Research Technician 3 position for the Hermiston Experiment Station at Oregon State University (OSU).
This position will be located in Hermiston, Oregon.
The incumbent is responsible for supporting the Irrigated Crop Entomology research and extension program of OSU’s Hermiston Agricultural Research & Extension Center (HAREC).
This includes organizing and executing lab, greenhouse, and field experiments; conducting insecticide trials; monitoring and identification of insect pests in field crops; rearing and maintaining insects in the lab and greenhouse; Will organize data and assist with finalizing research methodologies.
Will also assist in the preparation of reports, grants, outreach materials, and assisting in outreach events.
The incumbent may also work with and/or supervise/mentor high school, undergraduate, and graduate students with research projects, as needed.
May (under the guidance of and in cooperation with a project leader) prepare and present research materials and/or findings at professional meetings or to professional journals.
This position requires driving a station vehicle and ATV to the various field sites.

Key Responsibilities 25% – Establish field experiments conducted under PI’s supervision including, planning, mapping, and planting experimental plots, pre-plant soil and plot preparation, and pre- and at-plant pesticide applications.
General maintenance of experimental plots including, planting, pesticide treatment applications, watering, sampling, harvesting, assessing crop yield and quality, etc.
Communicating with farm crew at the station is essential, especially regarding scheduling of irrigation, herbicide, and insecticide applications.
25% –monitoring and identification of insect pests from field crops; conducting insecticide trials in the lab, greenhouse and fields; and provide support for researchers (e.
g.
, PI, graduate and undergraduate students, and postdocs) in the program.
Drive state vehicle to field sites.
Position will also be required to drive ATV vehicle.
25% - Collect insect, pathogen, and plant samples; organize and enter data from the field experiments; rear and maintain insect colonies; perform insecticide laboratory bioassays; laboratory cleanliness and maintenance of lab equipment.
10% – Maintain and/or schedule required maintenance of all equipment associated with the entomology program (i.
e.
, CO2 canisters and spray equipment, greenhouse utilities, program vehicles, etc.
) to ensure good working order.
Order supplies for laboratory, field and/or greenhouse research for the entomology program and maintain a record of supplies and suppliers.
10% – Oversee work of student and temporary employees working in the laboratory hired during periods of high research activity (April-October).
May help PI interview and hire student workers.
Assist PI in outreach events (e.
g.
, Field Days, Workshops, Farm Tours), publication (e.
g.
, Extension, peer-reviewed and newsletter), and grant activities 5% – Participate in group meetings, discussions and staff events.
What We Require A Bachelor’s degree in (specific area of biological science) and two years of experience related to the area of assignment at a Biological Science Research Technician 2 level.
Three additional years of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Science Research Technician 2 level may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree.
What You Will Need A Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, molecular biology, microbiology and two years of experience related to the area of assignment at a Biological Science Research Technician 2 level.
Three additional years of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Science Research Technician 2 level may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree.
Possess or ability to obtain a Public Pesticide Applicator License with ‘Insecticide/fungicide’ category within six months of hire date and maintain while in the position.
Possess or ability to obtain an ATV certification within 30 days of hire and maintain while in the position.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq.
Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
