THE ROLE
Responsible for overall leadership, direction, and management of a group of patient care areas including the practice of professional nursing, patient care quality, operations, department planning and development, employee development, and evaluation of services.
Provides administrative support to a team of managers in assigned patient care areas as well as ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and standards of practice.
Integrates and coordinates services using a proven hands-on approach.
This position is directly accountable to the CNO.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Plans, develops, implements and maintains programs and operations which integrate system wide operational components of Surgical Services to include operational and capital budget planning, product standardization, clinical practices, performance improvement initiatives, etc.
Demonstrates diplomacy, excellent follow-through and a visible management style.
Provides shared leadership practices through engaging teams to share responsibilities and accountability for continuous, ongoing system assessment, evaluation and improvements.
Establishes outcomes and objectives relative to patient care that bridges the business and science aspects of patient care.
Communicates department and institutional information to caregivers Holds mid-level management as well as nursing staff directly accountable for performance improvement and quality care initiatives as outlined by all regulatory agencies.
Coordinates and takes leadership role in strategic planning activities for all assigned areas.
Provides evidence of ongoing performance improvement activities that will affect operational (process) efficiency, staffing effectiveness and market share tactics.
Provides evidence of ongoing Customer Service action plans based on assessment and analysis of Customer Service scores and reports.
Assists with Patient Safety Initiatives specific to operational area and the organization.
Provides nursing leadership for assigned departments and ongoing staff educational development.
Promotes positive nursing image, appearance, and professional practice in nursing organizations and schools of nursing.
Maintains a current knowledge of health care trends and issues affecting the delivery of patient care.
Remains aware of and assures compliance with regulatory agency standards and accrediting requirements, including those of AORN and APIC.
Assures the standard of patient care and clinical practice is of the highest quality.
Establishes and monitors sound fiscal practices which promote and produce exceptional nursing practice/patient care programs.
Effectively utilizes staff through developing staffing schedules which meet the needs of the department, provides optimum patient care and are cost effective.
Supervises professional level staff, providing direction and guidance to the same, creating a team environment through training, timely recognition/evaluation, and in service education which produces optimum work habits and job performance.
QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Master's Degree in Nursing, other healthcare field, or business from an accredited educational institution; or actively enrolled in a qualifying Master’s Degree program from an accredited educational institution; or Coursework/Training in Leadership, Healthcare Administration or Management (preferred) Upon hire: Washington Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed) 5 years of recent progressive experience in Periop 2 years in a leadership/Management role Knowledge of the principles and practices of management, leadership and supervision Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations governing patient care in an acute care facility; knowledge of related Joint Commission and DOH standards, knowledge of related St.
Mary Medical Center policies and procedures Knowledge of budget preparation and control Knowledge of patient/staffing ratio requirements and knowledge of scheduling techniques Knowledge of operating, cath lab and endoscopy room equipment and products Knowledge of data collection, analysis, trending and monitoring Knowledge of hospital operations, including revenue cycle Knowledge of interviewing, selection, orienting and scheduling techniques applicable to professional, technical and clerical staff Comprehensive knowledge of healthcare procedures, practices and techniques Ability to direct and work with others in a fair, consistent and respectful manner Ability to effectively manage assigned departments and to directly supervise employees Ability to interpret and ensure compliance with regulatory agencies, related federal and state laws and regulations, medical center policies and procedures Ability to communicate effectively both in oral and written communications Ability to use effective interpersonal skills; such as tact, patience and courtesy Ability to analyze, evaluate and resolve patient/departmental issues, concerns and deficiencies Ability to coordinate the department functions and collaborate with other medical center departments with the outcome of providing quality patient care Ability to work confidentially with discretion Must possess the ability to support staff and facilitate success within the respective departments, as well as foster and nurture relationships with the Medical staff, hospital and community Ability to function effectively in stressful situations and to meet schedules and time lines.
Ability to work independently with little direction Ability to be flexible in the changing healthcare environment Ability to willingly accept responsibility Ability to perform all other duties as assigned.
